Tennis - Teens Wozniacki, Wickmayer reach US Open semis

September 10, 2009 |15:03 | Sports  By : Team X

Teen upstarts Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium fought through the tension to reach their first Grand Slam semi-finals with nerve-testing US Open triumphs.  Ninth seed Wozniacki, until now the top-ranked woman never in a Slam final eight, ousted 70th-ranked US teen Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-2 while Wickmayer, never before past a Slam second round, beat Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5, 6-4.

The 19-year-olds will meet in a Friday semi-final with the winner to play for a US Open title Saturday against either defending champion Serena Williams, an 11-time Grand Slam champion, or Belgian Kim Clijsters, back after a two-year layoff to start a family.

Wozniacki shrugged off the cheers at Arthur Ashe Stadium for home-nation hero Oudin and snuffed out her comeback bid early in the second set. "I was really nervous out there. I'm so happy I fought so well and was able to pull the match out," Wozniacki said. "It was important to keep positive. I knew if I showed emotion she was going to pick up on it."

Tour de France 2009: can Lance Armstrong win?

Tour de France 2009: can Lance Armstrong win?Why is he riding the Tour for the first time since 2005?
Who can presume to get inside the mind of Lance Armstrong but the Tour de France has been his life. After recovering from cancer it was his sole focus every year. Nothing else mattered, and not surprisingly his retirement left a huge hole in his life. He has missed the peloton banter and he has missed the direction the Tour de France gave him. Then there is the question of his legacy. He is very well aware of allegations that he must have resorted to drugs to win his seven consecutive tours and wants to hit back at that notion. What better way than to put up a half-decent performance this year just short of his 38th birthday, demonstrably riding clean, four years after his retirement. It's a no lose situation. If he does well it's mission accomplished, but if Alberto Contador is just too strong he can win plaudits riding in support. If all goes wrong, well what did you expect from a 37-year-old who broke his collar bone three months ago?

January 17, 2009 |18:48 | Sports  By : Team X

The life of a sportsperson revolves around rigorous training, stadiums and international tours. And it is only after retirement that one starts taking stock of other interests beyond sports. Matthew Hayden is one who is going through such a phase after hanging up his Baggy Green.

Hayden has a dream of working with the government on an Aboriginal cricket programme and he has discussed it with none other than Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. No sooner had the news got out that Hayden was stepping down from cricket than the phone rang. It was Rudd, keen for a quick word.

Hayden's people and Cricket Australia (CA) had a meeting with Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin after that. "I want to be part of what I think can happen soon, and that is for the first indigenous Australian to wear the baggy green," Hayden said this week.
